Projects > Woman Build

Amongst a sea of pink; the sound of hammers, saws and the most pleasant of all, laughter. September 19 was the kickoff day for the 2009 Women Build and the women were hard at work. One of the purposes of the build is “to celebrate the impact of women in Central Virginia”. Most of these ladies had no experience, but they were eager to learn.

GLHFH is proud to sponsor Women Build 2009, the third Women Build project for our Lynchburg affiliate. This home is being built at 1808 Locust Street, and is possible due to the generous donations received from women in
Central Virginia, as well as other individual and corporate donations. The home is being built for the Carter family, a single mother with two young sons.

If you would like to come out and be a part of this great experience, please call Pamela Barton at (434) 528-3774 to sign up. We work each Saturday from 8:00 until 3:00.

It has been two months since our official kickoff and the progress is outstanding! The impact of the mostly female work force is evident. The roof is ready for shingles, the windows and doors are in and the front deck is finished. We are currently in the process of hanging drywall. First-time volunteers have
become regulars and now feel confident in the tasks they are given. A sense of pride is in the air as each work day comes to a close.

The prospective homeowner states that she drives her sons past their home each week to show them the progress. They are very excited and looking forward to Spring, 2010 when they will be in their new home.
