Home Ownership ProcessHabitat for Humanity home ownership provides secure, affordable housing for families in need and who qualify to partner with Habitat to build a home. Habitat believes home ownership is a vital step in creating self-esteem in families, children and neighborhoods and is the most basic way to break successive generations of poverty. Studies show that when a Habitat house is being built in an area the impact on the development and improvement of that area is significant. Home ownership brings a renewed feeling of self-worth, which has a palpable affect on the children in that household. Greater Lynchburg Habitat for Humanity is an equal opportunity housing provider. - Families must submit an application and the application is processed through the Family Selection Committee which is made up of volunteers from the community.
- Selection is based on each individual family’s level of need, willingness to partner and to accept the responsibility of homeownership, and their ability to pay the mortgage.
- Habitat does not give houses away.
All individuals are encouraged to apply; the initial application process takes from six to eight weeks. Once approved by the Board of Directors, the potential home owner will be required to provide a $400 deposit before closing on the house and have also participated in a documented 300 hours of sweat equity in building their home or the home of others. Along with the 300 hours of sweat equity, each prospective homeowner must participate fully in classes on money management, budgeting, conflict resolution, how to be a good neighbor, and some basic home repair classes.
